Classified - Inner Ninja (ft. David Myles)
I will admit. I still watch Grey's Anatomy. That damn show still manages to keep me interested, even though it's kind of past its prime. It still features some really awesome music though, and that's where I heard this kick-ass track.

Gobble Gobble - Boring Horror (Sundance Remix)
This is another of those good examples where the remix is actually better (in my humble opinion, of course) to the original. Here's the totally catch Sundance Remix of Boring Horror:

Magic Man - Waves
I've posted Magic Man songs before and I've stumbled across yet another great track by them. These guys rock! I'll definitely be picking up their album whenever I'm at HMV next.

Shad - Fam Jam (Fe Sum Immigrins)
I'm not a big rap fan, but the quality of this track speaks for itself. It helps that it's not a mainstream rap song; no racist or sexist lyrics, which is a nice change.

Allman Brown (ft. Liz Lawrence) - Sons & Daughters
I know I'm big on the synth pop songs, but sometimes a solid ballad does the heart good.

Chromeo - Fancy Footwork
Just discovered this little gem from a few years ago in my music collection.

Heartcopy - Re-do
It feels like a two-for-one day...I was shocked to see that this song only has 78 plays on soundcloud. That's shocking, because it's a nice mellow track to listen to.
Wild Child - Crazy Bird
Even though I keep catching myself whistling along to this at work and I look like a complete crazy person (and a shittacular whistler to boot), it's still one of my faves right now.

American Authors - Believer (Hyperbits Remix)
I'm not usually a fan of remixes. And I'm REALLY not usually preferential to remixes over the original, but this one is the exception. This is such a catchy remix. The original is pretty decent, but it doesn't have the joie de vivre that this does. This makes me dance at my desk at my stodgy office workplace. Sure, I look like a crazy person, but it's such fun!
And here's the original (because it is actually pretty darn good):

Caravan Palace - Clash
I was obsessed with this song back in June 2012, but it's drifted into the recesses of my music library since then. I was pleasantly surprised to find it on the September BIRP! playlist and am enjoying a resurgence of this catchy electro-swing ditty.

Lorde - Million Dollar Bills
I just couldn't get into Royals, but this track caught my attention. Still not quite as catchy as The Love Club, but it's almost as good.
*sigh* I wish my hair had beautiful curls like that...

Born Gold - Hunger
This is a great song; very dramatic sounding. You can also download it from Soundcloud!

Panama Wedding - All of the People
This song kind of reminds me of the 80's with all the ploinky sounds. Very catchy. This one was an instant like. :)

Grouplove - Ways to Go
I love the video for this song because I am envious of that kid's awesome dance moves. I love the reckless abandon. It's how I want to dance when I'm listening to music, but am too self conscious to attempt it.

Come On Live Long - Waiting
This is a brand new track....well it was 2 years ago anyway. Totally missed the boat on this one when it came out, but I'm glad I've discovered it now. Even if I am a little late to the party.

Swim Deep - King City
Yet another Swim Deep song that has snagged my interest. I may have to check them out in more detail soon! Listened to this on the way home; "with the sun on my back it's a nice day" indeed.

Parade of Lights - We're the Kids
This is my summer anthem of 2013. Everytime I hear it I love it a little more.

Cosmo Sheldrake - Rich & The Fly
Wow! Where did this guy come from (yes, I can read. I know he literally comes from England)? He uses the looping techniques I've grown to love since I stumbled upon Zoe Keating, oh those many years ago, to fantastic ends. He has two songs on the new June BIRP! playlist and I instantly loved both. I keep oscillating back and forth between which I like more. Initially it was Rich since I enjoyed its mellow vibe and quirky high vocals, but then I started to really dig the Bollywood inspired sounds of The Fly. Tough choice.

Capital Cities - Safe and Sound
Yet another song I missed the boat on. I seriously underestimated the quality of the May 2011 BIRP! playlist; I have found 4 songs that I LOVE on it that I seemed to have missed the first time. Maybe it's because the cover art was so unappealing to me...it was vaguely creepy and in washed out colours...not my style.

Andy Bull - Keep on Running
I can't really think of anything specific to say here. The song is really catchy, but it also has some interesting lyrics. Not a lot of songs can pull off the word "panacea." Props.

I'm from Barcelona - Battleships
HOW did I miss this song?! Thank goodness that I'm going back and giving another listen to some old songs or this one may have forever been lost to the oblivion of my massive music collection!

Blind Pilot - One Red Thread
One word: Tambourine!! Take a listen, you won't regret it.
Also, I know that I've already posted about Amanda Palmer, but I just saw the video for Want it Back and felt the need to share it. It's a great new twist on a a lyric video (this is the "uncensored" version, so if you have frail sensibilities, you can google the "clean" version. Or grow up and deal with a little bit of nudity.):

Magic Man - Texas
It took me a few listens for this to burrow under my skin and wiggle its way into my brain, but right now I'm really digging it.

Underground Railroad - Lucky Duck
I have been going back through my music collection and giving a bunch of music another listen that I kind of glazed over before. Every month I download a playlist with 100+ new indie songs on it, so I don't often give them enough attention the first time around. I stumbled across this little gem today and have been kicking myself all day that I didn't give it the cred it was due back in June 2011!
You can download the track for free in the June 2011 BIRP! playlist here:

Admiral Fallow - Beetle in the Box
This song was featured on last night's episode of the Big C and I immediately loved it. It reminds me of a cross between Irish rock and the Reindeer Section (one of Gary Lightbody's side projects.)

Good Graeff - Hold Me Fast
I love the strings on this track. I'm a sucker for the drama evoked by the cello. Have I mentioned how much I wish I had actual musical talent?! They seem to play quite a few shows...unfortunately they're all in Florida. I have always wanted to go to Florida...

Ted Zed - I Don't Mind
I can't get enough of this song right now. Unfortunately there's just the one song on soundcloud, but hopefully they release some more stuff soon.

Boy Eats Drum Machine - I, William Your Ex-Lover
This is kind of an older track, but I was putting together a CD for some friends at work and I was trying to find some older stuff that I think they would like and I rediscovered this little gem.
Boy Eats Drum Machine - I, William Your Ex-Lover
You can also get a free download of the song from Last.fm.

The Colourist - Little Games
Catchy tune and they spelled colour correctly (i.e. with a u) which earns two thumbs up from me! Their description on last.fm is "A majestic math pop jungle rock band."... come again??

Raine Maida - Montreal
Maida has been a persistent presence on the Canadian music scene for over a decade with his band Our Lady Peace. Besides being ridiculously sexy (Chantal Kreviazuk is a lucky woman), he's also incredibly talented. His first single, Montreal, from his new solo album "We All Get Lighter" is beautiful. You can listen to it on his site in the "Music" section:

The Crookes - Afterglow
This is one of those songs that you crank up when you're home alone and dance around in your underwear. Not that I'd know from personal experience...who am I kidding? I have been routinely doing that for weeks now. Also great for car dancing (though preferably not in your underwear).

Urban Cone - We Should Go To France
I first heard Urban Cone last April when I found their song "Freak" and immediately fell in love with it. This new song is another great effort by them. They kind of remind me of Miike Snow's sound.
Also make sure to check out Freak:

Lorde - The Love Club
I'm writing this while watching The Walking Dead. It's an odd juxtaposition. This song would most definitely NOT make it onto the Walking Dead soundtrack, unless of course they moved away from mindless flesh eating machines and decided to introduce a little joy via a dance party. Can't you just see all the prison dwellers blasting some pop-tastic tunes? Anyway, Lorde is a mere 16 years old, but she already has a great sound developed and I'm looking forward to hearing more from her in the future.

Fallulah - Out of It
This little gem comes from Denmark's Fallulah. This was another track that immediately hooked me. It's got an infectious beat that makes me want to start dancing regardless of my surroundings (and, in fact, I have at work several times...my coworkers already think I'm pretty weird, but that didn't help the matter).
Sunday, March 17, 2013
The Shades - Circles
I was a little thrown off at first when I saw that the tags on last.fm for The Shades included "skinhead reggae." I was relieved when I read the description to find a list of a couple of different bands going by the name and none of them seem to be the one I was listening it. I guess this is a lesson in picking a unique name for your band.

Conway - Big Talk
If crack came in music form, this would be it. I can't get enough of this song this week. Enjoy!
Sunday, March 10, 2013
Bowmont - Ruphmiup
I love this track, but how on Earth do you pronounce it?? Is it "rough me up"? This is just like when I first discovered Lykke Li and I thought it was pronounced "likely." Made that mistake for weeks before someone corrected me! Anyway, however it's pronounced, it's a great song, so enjoy:

Everything Everything - Duet
I guess I'm behind the times in discovering Everything Everything. The Brits have been onto them since 2009. Clever Brits. I loved this song the first time I heard it. That doesn't happen very often; usually it takes a few listens for me to really get a feel for a song. I'll definitely have to keep my ears open for more from them.

Amanda Palmer is Amazing
I have been a long time fan of Amanda Palmer and the Dresden Dolls and she continues to amaze me. I have seen her live about 5 times now and everytime is a unique and memorable experience (my favourite memory is of her crowd surfing and releasing a giant parachute that was attached to her outfit and spread over the heads of the crowd). She recently gave an amazing talk at the TED conference about how she has managed to successfully adopt a "pay what you want" model for her music. As she says in the talk, "her music isn't for everyone", but I find it refreshing and completely unlike anything else out there.
Here's the TED talk video:
Here's one of many great AFP songs:
And here's one of my favourite Dresden Dolls songs:

Astronaut Husband - Stay
This song is pretty stripped down and simple. I can't get enough of it. This definitely would have been featured on Dawson's Creek back in the day. It's been a rough week at work and this song has helped me get through some of the stressful moments.

Chlöe Howl - No Strings
I can't really find much about Chlöe Howl besides the fact that she's a UK pop singer. She apparently hasn't hit it big enough to have a wikipedia page yet. She only has two songs up on SoundCloud so far ("Music" is actually a duplicate of "Rumour"), but they're both quite catchy.

Crystal Fighters - Champion Sound &
I was away last weekend enjoying the beautiful canals and sights and sounds of Amsterdam, so I never got a chance to post a song. I figured I would do two this week to make up for it.
Crystal Fighters - Champion Sound - I heard this song featured in an episode of Cougar Town. They were all having a dance party. This song was perfect for the scene and now that's all I want to do when I hear it!

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis - Same Love (ft. Mary Lambert) - This album has kind of expanded past the indie genre to storm the popular charts, but it is a fantastic album that deserves all of the accolades. I'm not a huge hip hop fan, but I also try not to rule out any genre based on my preconceived notions. The reason why I love this song is the strong pro-acceptance message. I feel strongly about equal rights and equality and I hate that people are judged and condemned by others for things they can't change (race, sexual orientation, gender, etc.). None of these things can be changed, but attitudes can be. This song gives me hope that maybe someday they will.
